Big Deal

Turns out, good jobs are a very Big Deal.

Big Deal, powered by South Carolina’s 19 member-owned electric cooperatives, is a multifaceted awareness campaign introducing middle school students to jobs in the trades, particularly within the manufacturing industry.

Through Skilled Trips – immersive field trips that include a facility tour and hands-on activity – 7th grade students across the Palmetto State discover the big, exciting opportunities that have been in their community all along. The Skilled Trips have been designed with the student experience at the forefront, where the student is the protagonist – exploring what their future could look like.

Today’s middle school students are diverse, dynamic and curious. They don’t process the world around them the way previous generations did – they process experiences, aesthetics and belonging signals. While some of them have begun to process their future career plans, the vast majority have not. And that’s fine, they’re children. But when they advance from the 7th grade to their final year in middle school, they’ll be tasked with making a very adult decision – implementing the Individualized Graduation Plan (IGP), a roadmap developed in the 8th grade to map out a student’s high school courses and future career goals.

Before anyone can tell these students what a “good” career is, we’re going to show them. And we’re going to make a very big deal about it.

The cooperatives have spent nearly a century building the systems that keep South Carolina running and investing in our communities. Big Deal builds the next layer – the members who will keep everything running for the next century.

It’s a big deal these jobs are here. It’s a big deal the cooperatives are investing in introducing them to students, early. It’s a big deal employers are willing to open their doors to 7th graders – oftentimes, never having anyone under the age of 18 in their facility. It’s a big deal schools are reallocating time in the classroom for Skilled Trips.

We make things in South Carolina – tires, jets, SUVs, washing machines, power tools. We’re proud of it and we’re going to make it a very big deal.
